Recently MMG applied its new Tip Vortex Cavitation Reduction (TCR) technology to a series of 10000TEU container vessels. During inspection of these vessels slightly paint wear was observed on the rudder. These occurred in the vicinity of the propeller tip wake indicating a strong tip vortex. MMG applied surface modifications which influence the cavitating vortex from the propeller blade tip and hence reduce cavitation. The TCR technology has been developed through MMG’s continuous research programme and is ready to be applied to all kinds of propellers.

MMG has developed the Virtual Contact Test (VCT) to reduce expenditure on propeller assembly. With the VCT the conical hub bore of the propeller is measured precisely down to a hundredth of a millimetre and aligned with the design data of the shaft while the propeller is still in the MMG workshop. Thus the propeller is supplied ready for fitting. If required MMG engineers will test the dimensions of the ship‘s shaft using a mobile measuring unit. More than 200 propellers mounted successfully using the VCT proof the reliability of this unique method.
The VCT, which is recognised by DNVGL,KR; ABS, LR and BV, makes the traditional blue bedding test fully superfluous – in both redesign programmes and on new ships.
